What Are Dermal Fillers?
As we age, natural levels of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and fat within the face gradually decrease, which can lead to volume loss, reduced facial definition, and the development of lines and folds. Dermal fillers can help restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, improve symmetry, and create a fresher, more youthful appearance.

Does Dermal Filler Treatment Hurt?
Many dermal filler products contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) to help improve comfort throughout treatment. In addition, topical anaesthetic cream or ice can be used to numb the area prior to treatment if required.
You may feel a brief stinging, pressure, or pinching sensation during the injections, but the procedure is generally well tolerated. Your practitioner will ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout the treatment.
Risks and Side Effects
Dermal filler treatments are generally very safe when performed by appropriately trained medical professionals. Most patients experience only mild and temporary side effects.
Common side effects include:
- Redness at the injection site
- Mild swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness or discomfort
- Temporary firmness in the treated area
- These effects are usually mild and typically resolve within a few days.
Less common side effects include:
- Infection
- Prolonged swelling or inflammation
- Lumps or nodules
- Skin discolouration
- Delayed inflammatory reactions
Rare but serious complications include:
- Vascular occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel)
- Skin damage or tissue loss
- Scarring
- Visual disturbances, including loss of vision
To minimise risk, all patients undergo a detailed consultation and assessment prior to treatment. Our practitioners are trained to recognise and manage complications, and emergency medications and equipment are available on site should they be required.
Patient safety is our highest priority, and we will discuss all risks, benefits, and aftercare recommendations with you before proceeding with treatment.
Aftercare Advice
Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately following dermal filler treatment.
It is common to experience some temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or small injection marks after treatment. Swelling can be more noticeable in certain areas, particularly the lips, and usually settles over the following few days.
For the first 12 hours after treatment, we recommend avoiding makeup on the treated areas.
To minimise swelling and reduce the risk of complications, please avoid the following for 24–48 hours where possible:
- Vigorous exercise
- Alcohol consumption
- Excessive sun exposure
- Saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs
- Extreme heat or cold
The final result of dermal filler treatment may take up to 2 weeks to fully settle as any swelling resolves and the filler integrates into the tissues.
A follow-up review may be arranged if required to assess your results, answer any questions, and ensure you are happy with your treatment outcome.
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Dermal fillers are not permanent. The longevity of treatment varies depending on the product used, the treatment area, and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle.
Most dermal filler treatments last between 6–18 months, although some areas may last longer or require maintenance sooner than others.
As the filler is gradually broken down by the body, volume and definition may slowly reduce over time. There is no requirement to continue treatment, and many patients choose to have maintenance treatments only when they begin to notice a change in their results.
