Pre & Post Surgical Rehabilitation
Prior to your surgery it can be highly beneficial to seek professional advice. Evidence shows that a strong prehab program for 8 to 12 weeks can improve outcomes after surgery dramatically. And in some cases, can even result in not requiring the surgery at all.
Often your original condition can cause secondary complications, slowing down your recovery post-op. A complete assessment of your movement and strength helps to identify key goal-setting targets to optimise rehabilitation.
Pre-surgical rehabilitation may focus on specific limitations identified through assessment, this may include appropriate exercise prescription or manual techniques to assist with mobility. Importantly, your physiotherapist can reassure you and answer any anxieties you may have regarding your operation.
Pre and post surgical rehabilitation and support for orthopaedic procedures. These include:
Shoulder – tendon or ligament repairs, arthroscopy, joint replacement, fracture management, acromioclavicular joint repair, decompressions, frozen shoulder, labral repair.
Hip – arthroscopy, labral repair, joint replacement, injection.
Knee – ligament repair (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL), cartilage or tendon repair, meniscal repair, arthroscopy, injection, joint replacement.
Spinal – fusions, stabilisations, discectomy, injections.

Post Surgical Rehabilitation
Following your procedure, your orthopaedic surgeon will advise you on the appropriate timeline to begin physiotherapy. Most operations will have a protocol to follow which your physiotherapist can guide you through appropriately.
Your physiotherapist will liaise with your consultant to feedback progress and monitor any aspect limiting recovery.
Post surgical rehabilitation treatment will focus on:
Restoring full mobility (range of movement)
Focus on strengthening muscles which have had atrophy due to disuse
Restoring healthy movement patterns to avoid compensatory movement
