How Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work
Anti-wrinkle injections use a prescription-only medicine that temporarily relaxes selected facial muscles. By reducing the movement of these muscles, the appearance of existing lines and wrinkles can be softened while helping to prevent deeper lines from developing over time.
Treatment is tailored to each individual and commonly targets areas such as the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Results typically begin to develop within a few days, with the full effect usually visible after 10–14 days.
As this is a prescription-only treatment, a face-to-face consultation is required to assess your suitability and discuss your goals before treatment can be prescribed. Results are temporary and typically last around 3–4 months, although this can vary between individuals.

What Areas Can Be Treated?
Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles in the upper face, including:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
Other treatment areas may also be suitable depending on your concerns and desired outcome. These can include:
- Lip lines (sometimes referred to as smoker’s lines)
- Jaw muscles (masseter muscles) to help soften jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or create a slimmer facial profile
- Excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Neck bands and other areas of facial muscle overactivity

Does the Treatment Hurt?
Very fine needles are used, and the sensation is often described as a small pinprick that lasts only a few seconds. The procedure is generally well tolerated and usually takes just a few minutes to complete.
Some patients may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection sites immediately after treatment, but this typically settles quickly.
Risks and Side Effects
As with any medical treatment, anti-wrinkle injections can cause side effects, although most are mild and temporary.
Common side effects include:
- Mild redness at the injection site
- Minor swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness or discomfort
- Temporary headache
It can take up to 14 days for the full effects of treatment to develop. Occasionally, small adjustments may be required following treatment to optimise the final result.
Less common side effects include:
- Temporary asymmetry
- An elevated outer eyebrow (“Spock brow”)
- Drooping of the eyebrow (brow ptosis)
- Drooping of the eyelid (eyelid ptosis)
Rare side effects include:
- Infection
- Allergic reaction
- Blurred or double vision

Aftercare Advice
Following treatment, you can return to most normal daily activities immediately. For the first few hours, it is recommended that you gently use the treated facial muscles through normal facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, and raising your eyebrows.
To help achieve the best possible result, please avoid the following for 4–6 hours after treatment:
- Lying flat or bending forward for prolonged periods
- Rubbing or massaging the treated areas
- Vigorous exercise
- Excessive heat exposure, including saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs
- Excessive sun exposure
You may wash your face and apply light makeup as advised by your practitioner. Results typically begin to develop within a few days, with the full effect visible after approximately 10–14 days.
How Long Do Results Last?
Anti-wrinkle injections are not permanent. The effects of treatment typically last between 3–6 months, although this can vary depending on the individual, the treatment area, and factors such as muscle strength and metabolism.
As the effects gradually wear off, muscle activity will return and lines and wrinkles may become more noticeable again. There is no requirement to continue treatment, and many patients choose to have treatments only when they feel they would benefit from a refresh.
If you are happy with your results and begin to notice the treated muscles becoming more active again, a repeat treatment can be discussed during a follow-up consultation.
