Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) is a common overuse injury in your lower body. It refers to pain and/or inflammation along the front of your leg. It is often the result of intensive weight-bearing activities such as running and jumping.

Common Symptoms

Pain will generally present around the anterior tibia (front of shin). This can be provoked through weight bearing exercise such as running and jumping.

Shin splints can be a sign of early stress fracture injuries. Your physiotherapist can complete a detailed assessment to optimise your rehabilitation and prevent future injury.

  • Reducing pain – through manual therapy techniques and injury education
  • Correcting muscular imbalances – targeted through appropriate exercise prescription
  • Advice – such as completing alternate activities such as swimming and cycling, highly beneficial in reducing weight bearing impact and continuing to improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Exercise plan – an optimised exercise plan to avoid future overload injuries
