Long Covid: treatment for post-viral fatigue (PVF).
We are starting to receive reports from patients (previously healthy and without underlying conditions) who have had coronavirus infection that they are having difficulties in returning to health and energy levels for weeks or even months after the onset of symptoms.
Some reports are from health professionals. It seems likely that some of them are experiencing what is called post-viral fatigue (PVF), or a post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS). There is a group of people who develop ME, which is classified by debilitating fatigue following a viral infection.
Signs and symptoms of PVF include but are not limited by the following list of symptoms:
Intermittent and recurring flare of viral symptoms.
Activity Induced Fatigue (Physical and mental).
Unable to maintain previous levels of activity.
Your Physiotherapist has been trained to identify signs and symptoms of PVF and can identify patients that are high risk for developing chronic fatigue syndrome. It must be diagnosed early, and an effective management plan is put in place to maximise recovery.
We urge you to book an online appointment so we can review your immune system function and aid full body recovery and prevent worsening of symptoms.
We still are uncertain to what causes post-viral fatigue. When the immune system is fighting off a viral infection the typical reaction is to produce immune cells called cytokines this seems to be particularly the case with coronavirus- Covid-19 causes an immune response named a cytokine surge.
A viral infection is very taxing on the immune system function, and patients develop symptoms such as fatigue, loss in energy levels, joint pain and muscular aching. While most people with post-infection fatigue will improve and return to normal health, proper management during the very early stage is an essential factor in trying to help any natural recovery process to take place. And patient evidence also indicates that appropriate initial management of post-infection fatigue lessens the chances of this turning into an ME/CFS-like illness.
Essentially, you need to take care of your body in the recovery process to aid immune system recovery.
Below is a screening tool used to aid identification of symptoms of PVF. Once identified, we can help you support your body in the recovery process.
